The court heard how Tyrone McFall, 21, from Ballysaggart Park, was caught on CCTV filling a bag with £19.47 of beverages from Lidl on the evening of August 24.

He was challenged by staff and left the bag before leaving.

Police recognised McFall and he was later interviewed and conceded that he had committed the offence.

“He has been in custody since February 27,” said Mr Karl Mallon, defending.

“Probation put his offending down to alcohol consumed. He is very anxious to prove himself to the court.”

Handing down a sentence of two months imprisonment, District Judge John Meehan said that the defendant was a “prolific offender” who displayed a “marked indifference” to his victims.

“He needs to change his mindset,” he told the court as he imposed a £25 offender’s levy.
