Proposal to ban right turn traffic at ‘ramp’

Roads Service is considering introducing a ban on vehicles turning right at a notorious accident blackspot in Larne.

The junction at Circular Road and the Harbour Highway – known locally at the ramp – has long been a source of frustration for many motorists and has been branded the most dangerous junction in the borough by local councillors.

Roads Service and the PSNI have recently reviewed the junction and observed traffic movements, and there are concerns regarding the apparent lack of understanding as to who has right of way.

With this in mind, Roads Service is proposing to ban right turn movement from the ramp on an experimental basis.

This will mean all motorists approaching the Harbour Highway from Circular Road will have to turn left towards Redlands roundabout.

The option of introducing traffic signals at the junction had also been considered, but Roads Services does not have room in its budget for such a scheme in the current financial year.
