Protestants outnumbered

THE 2,000 Protestants enrolled at the North West Regional College’s (NWRC) Londonderry campus in 2009/10 made up just 16.1 per cent of the student population, according to the Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey asked the Minister to give a breakdown of the religious background of students currently enrolled at NWRC.

He revealed that Catholics outnumbered Protestants by five to one and that they made up 81.1 per cent of the total population in 2009/10.

Dr Farry revealed the religious breakdown at NWRC as: Catholic 9,708 81.1 per cent; Protestant 1,994, 16.1 per cent; Other Christian 60, 0.5 per cent; Other 212, 1.8 per cent.

The total number of students who identified their religious breakdown was 11,974 although 2,607 did not identify.

The Minister said the data were obtained from the Further Education Statistical Record (FESR).
