Devoted Liverpool fan and music lover George MacCormac has passed away at the age of 88.

George, who lived at Whyte Acres, Banbridge was the dearly loved husband of Lucy and the devoted father of George Edward, father-in-law of Cindy and loving grandfather of Aisling, Sean and Niamh.

George passed away on Wednesday, December 11 at Craigavon Area Hospital. He was the son of the late Hugh and Rachel MacCormac. His mother sadly passed away when George was just two-years-old and he was brought up by his grandfather and aunt Cissie.

He attended the Lancasterian School and Abercorn Primary School. After leaving school he worked in Stevenson’s Garage on the Dromore Road. He then went to work for the NIRTB in Lisburn. He also worked at Goodyear before coming to Wrights, Dromore Street for a time before his retirement.

An ardent supporter of Liverpool FC, he loved walking through the Shankly gates with pride. George was a member of Banbridge Blue Masonic Lodge No 296 and Magherally Red 203. He had a great love of music and was a tenor in Holy Trinity Parish Church Choir. He loved both classical and church music and appeared in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Operattas with the Choral Society, but George’s great interest was centred around his home and family and watching with great interest the achievements of his grandchildren.

The funeral took place at Holy Trinity Parish Church on Sunday, December 15 and the Archdeacon Roderic West conducted the service,

Captain Geoffrey Walmsley paid a fitting tribute to George’s life and the Reverend Rosie Diffin read a lesson. Another lesson was read by George’s granddaughter Aisling. The hymns, ‘He Who Would Valiant Be’ and ‘Thine Be The Glory’ were sung. Dr Stephen Timpany presided at the organ and the robed choir led the praise. Interment took place privately in the New Cemetery. Family flowers were placed on the grave and donations in lieu of flowers are being sent to William Bell and Co. Funeral Directors, 23 Kenlis Street, Banbridge, BT32 3LR for Holy Trinity Parish Church.
