£0.5m legacy to ‘transform’ club

A CARRICKFERGUS businessman’s remarkable legacy to sport and the wider community will be revealed on Saturday with the official opening of the Tom Simms Memorial Park.

Mr Simms, who died in May of last year aged 80, gift-aided £0.5 million to Carrick Rugby Football Club to refurbish the facilities and grounds at Woodurn Road.

A Carrick RFC stalwart, Mr Simms played rugby at every level for the club, served on a number of committees and was a generous sponsor over the years.

Before he passed away after a courageous battle against cancer, he decided to donate the substantial sum of money to enable the club to build for the future and had wanted a modern and welcoming clubhouse, one that would encourage members and guests to stay and use the facilities.
