£1 million boost for West Bay in Portrush

The project costing over one million pounds is supported with grant funding from the Northern Ireland Tourist Boardunder the European Regional Development Fund through the Sustainable Competitiveness Programme 2007-2013.

Mayor of Coleraine Borough, Councillor David Harding emphasised the value of the scheme stating; “Upgrading the West Bay Promenade is a key element of the Portrush Regeneration Strategy.

“This is a high quality scheme consistent with Coleraine Borough Council’s strategic approach to Portrush and further enhancing its position as the premier tourist resort in Northern Ireland.

“It is also an important opportunity to continue our partnership with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board in developing sustainable tourism for Portrush with the support of the Portrush Regeneration Group.

“Council asks for public support on this project as it is a busy area throughout the year and parts of the thoroughfare may be inaccessible while work is ongoing.”

Works will include the replacement of the current railings creating access for all at the northern end of the strand.

As part of the project upgraded new seating and surfacing will lead to improved access onto Castle Erin Road.

New lighting will also be added to the promenade.

Northern Ireland Tourist Board Destination Manager Kathleen McBride commented, “The Northern Ireland Tourist Board, with finance from the European Regional Development Fund is pleased to support this project in Portrush which will transform the appearance of the West Bay promenade and enhance the natural surroundings.

Richard Eakin, Chairman of the Portrush Regeneration Group added, “This is another important step forward for Portrush which the Group is delighted to endorse.

“Maintaining the regeneration momentum is essential for Portrush in fulfilling its function as a strong economic driver for the Borough and Northern Ireland”.
