£133,883 collected in book fines

THE Western Education and Library Board (WELB) recovered £133,883 in fines for the late return of books and other items to libraries between 2005 and 2009.

Before Libraries Northern Ireland took over responsibility of the Northern Ireland Public Library Services WELB recovered 31,225 in 2005/6; 35,896 in 2006/7; 36,254 in 2007/8; and 30,508 in 2008/9.

The Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure Nelson McCausland revealed the figures in response to a query at the Stormont Assembly.
