While the tightening public expenditure environment in the year ahead will be challenging, Roads Service remains committed to ensure it can make best use of our resources and continue to deliver quality public services."

Improvement schemes completed in 2009/10 included the provision of 600metres of safety barrier on the B14 Ballyeamon Road in the townland of Cloghglass near Cushendall at a cost of 90,000 and the extension of the footway on the B15 Glenshesk Road from St. Patrick's Church, Glenshesk Road to St. Patrick's Hall on Lagge Road at Armoy.

Traffic calming measures, consisting of new school warning signs with integrated flashing lights, which operate morning and evening when pupils are entering or leaving school, have been installed at Straidbilly Primary School, Liscolman and St. Patrick's & St. Brigid's Primary School, Ballycastle, under the Speed Management at Rural Schools Programme.

In total 11.6 kilometres of carriageway were resurfaced at a total cost of 893,000, the most significant being 1,097 metres of the A2 Cushendall Road, Ballyvoy; 1,600 metres of the A2 Tromra Road, Cushendall and 1,250 metres of the A43 Glenariff Road, Waterfoot.

Speaking at the meeting, Terry Fulton, Principal Engineer, welcomed the continued investment in road maintenance, which is helping to rectify the damage caused by the severe conditions last winter.

He said: "A programme of resurfacing works includes 1,000 metres of the A2 Whitepark Road, Ballycastle, and 700 metres of the A44 Drones Road, Armoy and 1,100 metres of the B14 Ballyeamon Road, Cushendall."

Roads Service also presented the Council with a programme for local transport and safety measures, which is currently being developed for the area.

These projects include Gateways at the speed limits of Bushmills and Lisnagunogue; improved boarding facilities at rural bus stops and traffic calming measures in the vicinity of Bushmills Primary School.

Roads Service say they will be delivered as resources permit.
