£18,000 of unclaimed benefits identified

Age NI has helped identify more than £18,000 in local unclaimed benefits in just one week following the Newtownabbey Times campaign to encourage older people to claim what they are entitled to.

Jacqui Corscadden, Age NI head of services, said: “We’re so grateful to the Newtownabbey Times for giving us this opportunity to reach out to older people in the borough. We’re really pleased that people are calling us and that we’re able to support them to access the money they’re entitled to.

“Throughout this week, our advice lines have received a high volume of calls, all of which are dealt with by a small team of advisors. If you have called us, and are unable to get through straight away, please be patient and stay on the line. It’s a freephone number so the call will not cost you any money. An advisor will deal with your call as soon as possible,” she said.

Newtownabbey Times editor Valerie Martin said there had been an amazing response to the campaign so far.

“The fact that more than £18,000 in unclaimed benefits has been identified in just the first week of the campaign shows how big this issue really is. We hope that many older people in this area take up the opportunity,” she said.
