£190,000 power upgrade

NORTHERN Ireland Electricity (NIE) will be investing in two separate projects to upgrade the electricity network in Ballymoney over the coming weeks.

The first project will involve laying new cables and upgrading equipment in the town centre, in particular on the low voltage underground network around the Linenhall Street substation, High Street and Victoria Street areas. This work will begin on Sunday (7 November) and it is hoped that it will be completed by the beginning of December.

NIE has scheduled the town centre work to be carried out on Sundays and evenings to reduce disruption to businesses and pedestrians. For the same reason work will not be carried out on Remembrance Sunday.

The second project will also start this week and involves upgrading the 11,000 volt network in the John Street, Robinson Avenue, Trinity Drive and Armstrong Avenue areas of the town. As part of this network upgrade, sections of pavement will be excavated for short periods.

Natasha McGee, NIE Customer Relations Manager said. “We’re pleased to be able to begin this work in the Ballymoney area. These upgrades have been planned for a number of years and are important in improving the security of the electricity distribution system in the town.”

“We have tried to minimise the disruption of this work in the town centre as much as possible by scheduling it to take place on evenings and weekends, however, some essential work will be carried out within normal working hours. Towards the end of November there will be some traffic disruption in Linenhall Street where engineers will be laying underground cables to the substation.”
