£1k fine risk for censusrefuseniks

THE Census Office has sent letters to over 60 households warning they risk being fined up to £1,000 for failing to

fill in returns.

Registrar General Dr Norman Caven warned people in Londonderry who hhave yet to return census forms to do so now in order to avoid non-compliance action.

People in Northern Ireland have only a few days left to fill in their census questionnaire online as the web response facility is due to close shortly.

Every household must make an online return, or post back a completed paper questionnaire, to avoid the risk of a fine up to £1,000.

Dr Caven, said: “The online system is quick and easy to use and people who are finishing off their census have only a few days if they want to return it online. We will continue to accept paper questionnaires and we’re grateful to everyone who’s already taken the time to help tomorrow take shape by completing their questionnaire

Census staff are already visiting those households who have yet to send back their questionnaires to offer help and make sure everyone is counted.

“Anyone who refuses to take part may then be visited by a member of the census non-compliance team which will work across Northern Ireland, because completing and returning the questionnaire is required by law.”

To fill in the online questionnaire or for help and support visit: www.census.gov.uk/ni. Telephone support is available on 03000 2011 20.

Householders can fill in the census online using the Internet Access Code printed on the front of their questionnaire, or post back the completed questionnaire.
