£200 fine and points for driving offence

A COLERAINE man has been fined £200 and handed three penalty points after he was found guilty of driving without due care and attention following an incident in Ballymoney.

North Antrim Magistrates' Court heard on Wednesday that Jonathan Millar (25) of Alderbrook Gardens was travelling to lock up a supermarket, where he works as a supervisor, when he became involved in a road traffic accident at the junction of Main Street and Castle Street in January 2 this year.

The court was told at approximately 8.50pm the defendant’s Volkswagen Golf cut across the junction and collided with a Vauxhall Corsa.

The female driver of the Corsa, who later required 16 stitches in hospital, was trapped in her vehicle so the emergency services were called. When the police arrived they could not find Mr Millar, however he was found 15 minutes later at a nearby shop.

The defence told the court the defendant had been returning to lock up the shop but he was not in a hurry. It was added that Mr Millar only left the scene to phone the emergency services and he only did this once he had checked on the injured party.
