£200 fine for using mobile phone

A man detected driving while using a mobile phone was fined £200 at Londonderry Magistrates Court and was given three penalty points.

Mark Melly, of 4 Dunmore Gardens, was detected committing the offence as he drove through Creggan Heights and turned into Dunmore Gardens.

When police approached the car they saw the phone on the driver’s lap and Melly immediately admitted using it.

Melly’s solicitor confirmed that his client could not take up the fixed penalty notice as he had a previous record.

He was fined £200 and received three penalty points.
