£23.2m WHSCT travel claims in three years

STAFF at the Western Trust ran up a travel and subsistence bill of £23.2m over the past three years.

The bill rose by 400,000 to 7.9m last year. In 2007/8 health service staff claimed 7.8m in WHSCT and in 2008/9 the bill was 7.5m.

The Health Minister Michael McGimpsey revealed the expense costs in response to an Assembly Question.

He stated: "The purpose of travel and subsistence allowances is to reimburse staff for expenses incurred as a result of duties relating to their job."

He added: "Costs include mileage allowances, public transport costs, subsistence and car parking.

"Mileage allowance increased in 2008 due to rising fuel costs.

"HSC Trusts are endeavouring to keep travel and subsistence costs to an absolute minimum. This includes utilising new technologies such as tele/video conferencing and delivering more meetings in house," concluded Mr McGimpsey.
