£23k spent on obesity beds

THE Western Trust spent £23,299 on obesity beds over the past four years.

The spend on bariatric beds peaked at £10k in 2007.

The expenditure was the lowest in NI after the Southern Trust which spent £17,344.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey told Foyle MLA Pól Callaghan that no bariatric operations were carried out at all in NI over the past five years.

“There is no bariatric surgery service in Northern Ireland and no bariatric surgery has been carried out in Northern Ireland during the last five years,” he stated.

“The Health and Social Care Board is presently carrying out a limited pilot exercise for up to 150 patients to receive bariatric surgery in England. Upon conclusion of this pilot exercise the Health and Social Care Board will carry out an assessment of the financial implications and expected demand of introducing a comprehensive bariatric service in Northern Ireland,” he added.
