£26,000 funding

BALLYMONEY Community Safety Partnership has been successful in securing £26,540.40 from the Department of Justice Community Safety Unit for a young offender’s intervention project.

Ballymoney Council minutes said: ‘STRIDE (Success Through Recreation Intervention Diversionary Education) has been developed to address increasing concerns regarding anti social behaviour and criminal activity in the Ballymoney, Coleraine, Moyle and Limavady Council areas. STRIDE will offer education and skill based training to young offenders in a non-judgmental, supportive and vibrant environment from September 2011 – January 2012.

‘The programme will involve 15 weekly sessions, one evening a week from 6-9pm. There will also be 8 all day sessions including an exit residential. Each session will be themed exploring a different aspect of factors which have an effect on a young offender’s life e.g. criminal justice, mental health, sectarianism, drugs & alcohol, money matters, and citizenship. Participants will be transported to and from each session.

‘Participants will be recruited through the Youth Justice Agency and the PSNI. The programme will be built in to the young person’s court order or youth conferencing plan as part of their reparation.

‘Members expressed congratulations to Council’s Community Safety Manager for her input into this initiative. It was agreed that the Chair would write to her accordingly,’ said the minutes.
