£2m funding delight for Inst

The money will be used to carry out a number of refurbishment projects throughout the school.

Coleraine Inst is one of fifty schools in Northern Ireland to benefit from the funding.

Speaking to The Times on Friday, prinicipal Dr David Carruthers said ‘the boost was not only good for the school but for the whole community’.

Archie Linnegan, Chairman of the Board of Governors said:“The governors of Coleraine Inst have been working proactively on developing a vision for the future of post-primary provision in Coleraine for a number of years.

“Our proposals envisage that the future of post primary education in Coleraine would include at its centre the development of a co-educational Voluntary Grammar School on the CAI site. This new school would be able to work alongside neighbouring schools to deliver the Entitlement Framework and provide suitable educational pathways for all post-primary pupils in the sector.

“Originally it was our hope that a new build could be secured for a co-educational grammar school on the CAI site and that remains a longer term goal.

“Against the backdrop of the current economic climate however, we realised that funding for a new build is unlikely for the foreseeable future and subsequently targeted the School Enhancement Programme

“We are delighted that our application has been successful and view it as a vote of confidence by the Department of Education in the future of educational provision at Coleraine Inst.

“While welcoming this investment, we will continue with our efforts to develop our wider vision for post primary education in the Coleraine area and hope to share the details of it with various stakeholders in the near future.”
