£2m in bonuspayments for civil servants

NORTHERN Ireland’s army of civil servants received over £2m in bonus payments over the past three years despite the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression.

The Sentinel can reveal over 1000 civil servants collectively received £2,223,397 in bonus payements between 2009 and 2012.

The largest bonus payments were made at the Department of Social Development; £216k in 2011/12; £176k in 2010/11; £235k in 2009/10. And at the Department of Finance and Personnel: £146k in 2011/12; £140k in 2010/11; £117k in 2009/10. But bonuses were paid right across the civil service. Only at the Department of the Environment (DoE) were no payments made last year.

The Sentinel recently reported how Northern Ireland’s army of civil servants increased by 40 per cent over the last decade.

Five hundred more staff are now needed to make Northern Ireland function compared to the turn of the millennium.

Back in 2000 there were 1,240 civil servants working across the Executive’s various Departments. Now that’s increased by 499 (40 per cent) to 1,739 last year.

Finance Minister Sammy Wilson revealed how many people were on the public pay roll in response to an Assembly Question.
