£300 fine and drive ban for speeder

A one month driving disqualification and £300 fine have been imposed at Ballymena Magistrate's Court on a mechanic who was caught by police driving 39mph in excess of a speed limit.

The court, sitting in Antrim last Thursday, heard that Trevor Glendinning (22), of Doury Road, Ballymena, was detected driving on April 3 at 79mph in a 40mph zone at Larne Road Link in the town.

It also heard that there had been confusion over the speed reading as “a button had been pressed and the screen cleared” but that two police officers had witnessed the reading and this had been accepted by Glendinning.

A solicitor for the defendant, who already had 11 points on his driving licence, explained that these related to one incident of “no seat belt” and other speeding offences.

Observing that Glendinning “has a history of speeding”, District Judge, Desmond Perry, gave him a one month driving ban and a 300 fine.

Handing down the sentence, Mr Perry said if Glendinning came before him in court again “he will face the full rigours of the law”.
