Work on the £150,000 resurfacing scheme for Old Kilmore Road in Moira began on October 20.

“This is an essential maintenance scheme within the Lisburn area which will improve the safety and structural integrity of the Old Kilmore Road, which carries a high proportion of heavy goods vehicles. Some edge strengthening will also be included in the scheme.

“The autumn round of council meetings is a timely opportunity for councils to discuss potential schemes and priorities.”

At the meeting, Eastern Divisional manager Kevin Monaghan highlighted a number of improvement and maintenance schemes currently planned or progressed.

He welcomed expenditure on structural maintenance which had allowed the Division to deliver many needed projects including over eight kilometres of carriageway resurfacing incorporating works completed at A49 Saintfield Road, M1 Saintfield Road roundabout, Hornbeam Road, Kesh Road, Clontarrif Road, Cadgers Road and Lecky Road.

Carriageway and footway resurfacing schemes are also either completed or programmed at Pond Park Crescent, Ballybog Road, as well as footways in Hillhall Estate. Resurfacing works on the trunk road network have also been carried out at two locations on the A26 Moira Road. These schemes were near the junctions of Chapel Road and Lough Road.

Mr Monaghan said: “I am also pleased to note the recent completion of the new Puffin crossing at Antrim Road, Lisburn between North Circular Road and Benson Street.”

In a statement, Mr Kennedy warned that budget restrictions were preventing some maintenance work from being carried out.

He added, “While there remain pressures on capital budgets, Departmental officials will continue to develop resurfacing and traffic management schemes, to enhance safety, to improve traffic flow and provide measures for pedestrians and cyclists.”

Lagan Valley MLA Brenda Hale, has welcomed TransportNI’s announced progress on investment, totalling £3.3 million, for road improvements and maintenance schemes in the Lagan Valley area, for this year.

Amongst the schemes is £150,000 for the Old Kilmore Road, Moira.

Mrs Hale MLA commented: “I was approached by local residents from Moira, in May 2013, requesting traffic calming and measures to improve the Old Kilmore Road, Moira. TransportNI (formerly DRD Roads Service) stated that the Old Kilmore Road did not score highly enough to be considered for traffic calming measures and I am still currently in discussions with Transportni regarding this issue.

“Following a site meeting earlier this year, with TransportNI representatives, to continue to press for improvements, I am delighted that £150,000 is now being spent on the Old Kilmore Road.”
