ROADS Service have announced a £3.5 million spend on structural maintenance in the Craigavon area.

At this Monday’s council meeting Reynold Nicholson, Traffic, Network Development and Planning Manager addressed councillors about local issues.

Councillors commended Mr Nicholson on the work of the Roads Service, however, there were several niggles which were aired.

Councillors George Savage, Mark Baxter and Carla Lockhart were among those who were disappointed that Drumlin Road in Donaghcloney is not a priority given the number of accidents there.

Sinn Fein Councillor Mark O’Dowd said the removal of weeds from footpaths and kerbs in central Craigavon was something that the Roads Service should be able to tackle without impacting on their budget.

DUP man Robert Smith asked if something could be done about roads being opened and closed time and time again for utilities to be put it.

Councillor Meta Crozier said it was important for the rest of Windsor Avenue to be finished to the same level as the new roundabout at Brownlow House.

Mr Nicholson said: “A wide range of resurfacing schemes has been delivered in the Craigavon Borough in the past 12 months. Tightening public expenditure is an ongoing challenge for Road Service.

“However, I remain committed to deliver a programme of high priority road improvement and maintenance schemes for the borough, as resources permit.”

The programme for the year ahead includes a major resurfacing scheme on the Lurgan Road, Moira. A programme of local transport and safety schemes is now underway, including improvements at the Donaghcloney Road junction with Laurelhill Road.

Traffic calming schemes will also be delivered at Toberhewny Lane Lower in Lurgan and Ballynamoney Road/Cottages in Aghacommon.
