£39k cemetery upgrade

Ballycarry New Cemetery is set to benefit from a £39,000 upgrade later this year.

As reported previously in the Times, a local resident felt the graveyard had been neglected by Larne Borough Council and branded its appearance “a disgrace”.

But the local authority has now set aside funding in its capital budget to complete long-awaited work at the cemetery.

This includes repairs to the concrete paths, as well as bitmac surfacing of the entrance and other roads around the cemetery.

The first phase of the project (bitmac surfacing) will cost £15,840 and is expected to get underway in March.

Phase two (work on the concrete paths) is set to cost £23,125 and will be carried out later in the year.

Director of development Linda McCullough said work on the cemetery had been delayed “because of staff shortage due to sickness”.
