£4.4m laying people off

THE Western Education and Library Board (WELB) spent nearly £5m laying people off over the past three years.

Although WELB made no redundancy payments in 2009/10 it had the second highest lay-off expenditure after the Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) between 2009 and 2012 spending a total of £4,452,233.

The Education Minister John O’Dowd outlined the payments in response to an Assembly Question.
