The Ballymena school was one of 51 in the province recently selected to receive an upgrade in their buildings.

For St Louis the figure of almost £4m, which is the maximum available, will be used to develop facilities in the creation of a Centre of Excellence for art, music, moving image art, drama, and performance theatre within Kintullagh House, a listed building on their site dating back to the mid 1800’s. In 2014, St Louis, which currently has over 1000 pupils, celebrates its 90th year as an educational provider in Ballymena and is recognised as one of the top achieving schools in the province.

Principal Sean Rafferty is delighted with the funding for refurbishment which he says will open another chapter in the life of the school.

Commenting on the news, he noted that the project would revitalise a host of curricular areas in terms of world class resources and enable St Louis students to enjoy facilities that would be leading edge.

“We recently became recognised as a flagship school through the acquisition of the IQM (Inclusion Quality Mark) and this news really compliments many of our ongoing successes of recent times,” he said.

“As well as creating a stimulating learning and teaching environment, a building programme of this scale will also provide a much needed boost to the local economy as the work progresses over the next 12-18 months.

“All in all this is a good announcement for St Louis Grammar, our pupils and for the wider community in both education and economic terms,” he added.
