£55k investment boost for West Street area

The project, funded by the Department of Social Development and Carrickfergus Borough Council, is to support existing traders, promote the town and improve the attractiveness of the shop frontages.

Announcing his department’s £50k contribution, Social Development Minister Mervyn Storey said: “Over the past two years my department has invested some £2million in a major public realm scheme and targeted revitalisation projects in Carrickfergus town centre.

“This latest project is aimed at enhancing West Street; a gateway area of the town which has been declining for some time with a significant number of properties in a derelict state.”

The minister added: “This funding will help to improve the overall shopping and visitor experience to this area and the wider town of Carrickfergus.”

Welcoming the investment, the Mayor, Alderman Charles Johnston, said: “The funding received from the department in June 2013 has made a significant visual enhancement to the appearance of properties in Market Place and North Street so this additional funding will build on the recent improvements by bringing life and vitality to West Street.”
