£5m digital eight-screen cinema to open this year

CONSTRUCTION has begun on an eight-screen, fully digital cinema in Larne.

The 5 million 1,100-seater Omniplex is due to open in November, just five months after Asda opens a supermarket on the same Redlands site on June 7.

Employing up to 40 staff, the Omniplex will feature a 300-seater main screen cinema and seven others that will accommodate 100 people upwards.

Speaking after contracts were exchanged with development firm McKenzies (NI), the Omniplex chain's regional manager in Northern Ireland, Colin Johnston, said: "This will be our fourth completely digital eight-screen cinema in Northern Ireland which means we will be in a position to offer the very latest technology, including 3D and live streaming of big sporting and arts events including football, rugby, concerts, opera and so on."
