£7.9m WHSCT travel expenses bill

HEALTH staff claimed £7.9m in travel expenses in the Western Trust last year - the third highest level of claims in Northern Ireland.

The expenses were incurred as a result of duties relating to health workers' jobs including mileage allowances, public transport costs, subsistence and car parking.

It also includes the travel costs for those staff delivering health and social care to people in their own homes and local communities.

The Health Minister Michael McGimpsey revealed the details in response to an Assembly Question.

The claim in the Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT) was 7.9m. This was the highest level of expenses after the Northern Heath Social Care Trust (10.3m) and the Southern Health and Social Care Trust (9,).

The Minister stated: "The HSC Board and the Trusts are endeavouring to keep travel and subsistence costs to an absolute minimum through, for example, the use of tele/video conferencing and internal facilities for meetings, workshops and conferences."
