£800 to catch politicians speeding

THE 8,465 motorists caught by speed cameras in Londonderry last year (18 per cent of all motorists caught in Northern Ireland) will be interested to note that local politicians are to come under the spotlight with the installation of an £800 speed detection system in the Stormont Estate.

Finance Minister Sammy Wilson said the equipment was being installed as part of a traffic calming study being undertaken by DRD Roads Service at a total cost of £800. He outlined the installation in response to an Assembly Question.

The Sentinel recently revealed how twelve per cent of motorists caught speeding by PSNI safety cameras across Northern Ireland last year were detected on just two stretches of road in Londonderry’s Waterside.
