Got a new bike for Christmas?

The PSNI is offering cycle owners in Carrick the chance to avail of a security scheme.

Bikes can be marked for security and details stored on a register website.

To avail of the service, call your local crime prevention officer between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday, on the PSNI’s non-emergency number 101.

An officer will then agree a suitable time to call into a police station to have the bike security marked and registered.

When attending the police station for registration, cyclists must bring proof of ownership of the bike.

Each bike will be marked with its own unique reference number which the PSNI then uses to register with the Bike Register website.

Bike owners can also upload a picture alongside details of the cycle.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “The security marking and registration is a good visible deterrent to bike thieves. They know if they are caught in possession of a registered bike, the rightful owner can be traced and they will be arrested.”
