PSNI failed to wake Coalisland man asleep in driver’s seat

A Coalisland man was three and a half time the limit when he was found asleep behind the wheel in a car park, a court has heard.

In the early hours of October 14, Police discovered Igor Jelen, 49, from Lisnashee Court, slumped behind the wheel of his car.

Their attempts to awaken were unsuccessful but they noted vomit on the ground beside the driver’s door.

When they opened the car he woke up and they saw a bottle of vodka which was three quarters finished on the floor of the car.

He later gave a breath sample of 121mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Noting that the defendant was disqualified from driving for similar offending, District Judge John Meehan said, “It only expired in August and here you are in October.”

He then handed down fines totalling £350 as well as £15 offender’s levy before banning the defendant from driving for nine months. He further suspended his licence until produced.
