PSNI has record of296 crimes at cityhealth facilities

Almost 300 crimes were recorded at hospitals or mental health units in Londonderry over the past three-and-a-half years, according to PSNI records.

Criminals perpetrated 296 offences on Department of Health in the city between January 2011 and the end of June.

The PSNI also has records of 3,924 criminal offences where the location was a hospital or mental health unit, across Northern Ireland, for the same period. In the Foyle area there were 57 recorded offences in 2011, rising to 96 in 2012, falling back slightly to 91 during 2013. And in the first six months of this year there were 52 “recorded offences where the location was a hospital or mental health unit.” Only in Antrim and West Belfast were there higher concentrations of criminality at facilities designed to help the vulnerable and sick. In the former area, Antrim, the PSNI has a record of 1,690 crimes having occurred in just under four years. By contrast there were just 13 recorded offences in Limavady and just one recorded offence in Strabane. Across Northern ireland as a whole there were 445 arrests in connection with the 3,924 recorded offences.
