PSNI officer shot and injured during firearms training

The incident took place at the PSNI’s Seapark facility close to Carrickfergus on Wednesday.

No one else was involved in the and the male officer is said to be recovering at home from non life-threatening injuries.

A PSNI spokesman said: “A police officer received hospital treatment for minor injuries which occurred during firearms training in the Carrickfergus area shortly before 3pm on Wednesday 08 March.

“First aid was administered at the scene and the officer is now recovering at home.”

The Police Ombudsman’s Office said the PSNI had reported the incident to them quickly.

A spokesman told the Belfast Telegraph: “Police informed the Police Ombudsman’s Office about an incident in which an officer was injured during firearms training at Seapark police station near Carrickfergus. After discussion, it was decided that there is no requirement for an investigation by the Police Ombudsman’s Office.”

The sprawling Seapark base also houses the Northern Ireland Forensic Science Laboratory and is a storage centre for thousands of Troubles-related documents.
