PSNI Operation Season's Greetings

Hello everyone and welcome to the second week of my column. There is a lot of information I would like to share with you as we approach the Christmas festivities.

You may have noticed additional patrols in the area over the last couple of weeks. We have been busy out and about on Operation Cordella which was an anti-burglary campaign that took place across Northern Ireland.

I was the lead officer for the District so I’m pleased to say that as a result of the efforts of all those involved we have conducted high visibility patrols, made arrests and carried out a number of house searches which resulted in the seizure of drugs and people brought to court.

The good news is that the statistics on burglary are down, and I’m keen that we keep it that way. You can significantly reduce the chance of your home being burgled by taking a few simple precautions including locking windows and doors when you go out, even if it is only for a short period of time. At night, a well-lit home gives the impression that someone is in. Consider using timer switches to turn lights on when you are out and invest in external lighting. You can save energy and money with low energy dusk to dawn sensor lights. Remember most break-ins are opportunistic.

I’m sure everyone is busy preparing for the Christmas celebrations and the run up to the big day is pretty busy for us in PSNI. Operation Seasons Greetings is underway in the city and we have additional patrols deployed to prevent retail crime, burglaries and assaults, and to detect drink driving over the festive period. I’d like to share a few Christmas crime prevention tips to assist with your plans over the holidays.

Don’t tempt thieves by leaving presents on display in your home or car. Be cautious about storing expensive gifts in your home. Don’t keep large amounts of cash in your home to buy presents. Make sure your home is secure and keep doors and windows locked. Never, ever drink and drive.

Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. You can contact your local police in a variety of ways. In a non-emergency please dial 101.
