PSNI sniffer dog used in town centre drugs op

COLERAINE Neighbourhood Police carried out a number of planned drugs operations in Coleraine town centre last Friday.

A quantity of herbal cannabis was seized.

A 24 year old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class B controlled drug. He has been released on bail pending further police enquiries.

Police used a specialist trained drugs dog which was deployed in the town centre area and it was also used to search people travelling on public transport in an effort to locate anyone in possession of drugs.

Commenting on the operation Sgt Ian Armour, Neighbourhood Sergeant, told the Times: “Officers have been working with the local community in Coleraine to tackle the issue of drug supply and distribution and criminality in the area.

“The discovery of these drugs is an indication of our commitment to removing drugs from circulation. Through drugs seizures, we are reducing the harm that is caused by drugs in communities.

“Drugs and the wider associated anti-social behaviour issues that accompany drug misuse can have a devastating impact on communities and our young people. I would appeal to local communities for their continued assistance in bringing those involved in this criminal activity before the courts.”

“Officers will continue with this operation in the run up to Christmas.”
