Pub, bridge and mill listed

A PUB, former railway bridge, church, school, saw mill and post office are amongst twelve buildings to have been listed across Londonderry and Strabane over the past two years.

A number of private houses were also listed with the majority of the properties located in the Strabane area.

Amongst the new listings in 2010/11 were the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, the Royal Mail’s Strabane Delivery Office and The Farmer’s Home pub in Strabane.

Private houses in Ardcaien, Londonderry, Plumbridge and Strabane were also listed in 2010/11.

Last year the Breen bridge over the Mourne River (a former railway bridge), a Saw Mill at Holy Hill House, Artigarvan, and the former Strabane Technical College were all listed alongside houses in Donemana and Strabane.

Environment Minister Alex Attwood revealed approximately 10 per cent of all new listed buildings in the last two years were in the North West.

He said that 104 buildings have been listed in the past two years across Northern Ireland, 62 in 2010/11 and 42 in 2011/12.

“These are located across Northern Ireland but principally concentrated in the Council areas recently covered by Northern Ireland Environment Agency’s (NIEA) Second Survey of Buildings of Architectural and Historic Interest,” he explained.

He also added: “I can confirm that the NIEA is presently considering 993 buildings for listing as a result of the ongoing Second Survey and one off requests from the public and others.

“Please note, that as the Second Survey considers the quality of existing listings it is also reviewing an additional 810 buildings which are already listed.”
