Public asked to ‘keep an eye’ on Magherafelt schools

In recent years police have noticed a slight increase in criminal damage and nuisance incidents close to schools in the Magherafelt district, particularly during ‘after schools hours.’

Said chief inspector Tony Callaghan: “It is important to recognise that schools are community resources. Damage and thefts must be paid for out of limited budgets and that can reduce the amount available for teaching.

“There is much that can be done to protect property. People who live in areas surrounding schools can play a vital part of any crime prevention initiative.

“We are encouraging local residents to be on the look-out for suspicious behaviour and report it to the police.

“It is not our intention to encourage members of the public to confront possible criminals. That responsibility belongs to the police.”
