The news, which was quickly rescinded by the company, was met with outrage from both local residents and politicians.

In a new statement to the Mail, the public transport provider’s area manager, Simon Corrigan, said they had only ever intended to relocate two members of staff and that the bus station will stay open.

“There are some local operational changes planned that will have no impact on our passengers,” he said, “however these changes may have led to the misunderstanding.

“Two members of staff currently based at the station will be redeployed to Magherafelt with the remainder based at Cookstown.

“Following the public consultation on local bus services earlier this year we have worked hard to protect the geographic coverage of the network,” he went on.

“At no stage as part of this were we planning to change the status or opening times of Cookstown bus station as a passenger transport facility.”

The public information session is to be held at Cookstown bus station on Tuesday, August 25 between 10am-12noon.

Staff will be on hand to respond to any questions customers might have.
