Public is encouraged to have a say on the cutbacksplanned for the BBC

LONDONDERRY television and radio consumers are being given a chance to discuss BBC proposals to cut expenditure by £670m per year by 2016/17 at a consultation event at the Playhouse Theatre next Thursday, October 20.

The BBC Trust has launched a public consultation after reviewing a set of proposals from BBC management for changes to the services the BBC provides and the way it operates.

The proposals aim to set the course for the BBC to the end of its current Charter in 2016, based on a new programme of efficiencies and a clearer focus on the BBC’s editorial priorities.

Together, this will mean savings of around £670m a year by 2016/17.

The BBC Audience Council for Northern Ireland represents the interests of audiences in Northern Ireland to the BBC Trust - the governing body of the BBC - to help ensure that local audiences’ needs and expectations are at the heart of BBC decision-making.

The Council wants to get input from audiences in the Londonderry area to help inform the consultation, and invites audiences to join them in an informal discussion about BBC services – TV, Radio and Online - at The Playhouse Theatre, Artillery Street, on October 20, 2011, 4.15pm - 5.45 pm.

The Council is particularly keen to understand what quality and value for money services mean to audiences and welcomes the views of occasional or regular listeners and viewers, whether speaking as an individual or on behalf of a particular group or interest.
