Public meeting on hospital A&E

A public meeting on future of Causeway A&E will be held in Coleraine Leisure Centre on Wednesday, July 4, at 7.30pm.

Causeway Trades Council, organisers of the public meeting, say the meeting is to go ahead as planned despite media reports that the Northern Health Trust is proposing to retain A&E services at the hospital.

Trades Council Secretary, Rodger Doherty said: “Reports that Causeway A&E may be retained offer no comfort as they make no commitment to the long term provision of hospital services in the Causeway area.

“Currently, Antrim Hospital simply could not cope with the added numbers closure of Causeway would bring. However, Antrim is being expanded so retention of A&E at Causeway is the only workable solution until that expansion is complete. The threat to Causeway remains.”

The Trades Council is appealing to everyone in the area who wants to fight to retain the hospital to come to the meeting.

A proposal will be made at the meeting to form a Steering Committee to organise a campaign to defend the hospital

Mr Doherty added: “Last week UNISON organised a protest march to the hospital which demonstrated the strength of feeling for Causeway Hospital.

“Now is the time to build on that support and establish a broad based community campaign to take the fight forward”.
