Public piano playing urged

THE keys to Derry-Londonderry's UK City of Culture 2013 bid could be at your fingertips thanks to a special "Art of Participation" event taking place across the city over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

The bid team have placed pianos in public spaces across the city with the aim of encouraging impromptu musical performances, from musicians, singers and members of the public.

The pianos which are located in the bustling Lisnagelvin, Richmond, and Foyleside Shopping Centres will be in place over the weekend have been supplied by Henderson Music and facilitated by the City Centre Initiative.

With Derry's abundance of native musical bolstered over weekend by the influx of musicians and fans in tow for the musical jamboree that is the City of Derry Jazz festival, there are sure to be plenty of individuals and groups up for the challenge.

With special performances lined up from some of the city's most outstanding musical talent this event will bring right to the heart of the city as offering people a cultural experience as they go about their everyday business.

Jim Roddy of the City Centre Initiative is looking forward to seeing the eclectic mix of performances that are sure to arise over the course of event.

"It's going to be fantastic to witness so many people working in partnership on behalf of this great City. Good luck to one and all and let us ensure that we leave no stone unturned in our efforts to secure the status of UK City of Culture for Derry-Londonderry," he said.

Noelle McAlinden, creative adviser with Ilex, believes that the pianos will be a perfect outlet for the city's talent on a weekend when music has particular prominence in the public consciousness.

"This is an innovative event forming a partnership the many talented and musical people of the city and all the agencies and bodies working together to drive the City of Culture bid all set against the background of the famous City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival," she said.
