With work due to start originally in late October/November, the plans went on public display with traders and businesses alike meeting with representatives from the Council.

As a result of talking and listening to the traders Council is now postponing the work to early/mid-January, but in preparation for this the Council has appointed the contractor Northstone to carry out the work.

The third phase includes Church Walk, Castle Lane, Union Street, Carnegie Street and Watson’s Lane and entails the resurfacing of footways with asphalt and granite kerbs, the installation of street furniture, landscaping, tree planting, new lighting as well as undergrounding of unsightly overhead cables. There will also be a small number of additional parking spaces throughout the scheme.

Work will be phased with no more than two streets being worked on at any one time. Full details of the proposed works schedule will be confirmed before it starts. There will also be a dedicated trader liaison officer so that businesses will know in advance on which street work is starting and if they have any queries this will be the person they should contact. Pedestrian access will always be maintained as will access to the premises on the affected streets throughout the works.

This £750,000 investment brings the total investment in Lurgan to £5.5m over the last five years.
