Public realm work welcomed

THE start of work on Lurgan town centre's facelift has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Councillor Maurice Magill.

He said: “I welcome the fact that the public realm project to improve the surroundings in Market Street and Church Place started on January 4.

"It is fitting that the New Year brings with it a new opportunity for Lurgan through this 2.7million scheme which will involve the creation of a more pedestrian friendly town centre and a more relaxed shopping environment, with wider pavements, improved street lighting, and more green space.

“This project is the result of long consultation and negotiation and it will provide not only a new look for the town centre but a new opportunity for the business community.

"Along with the public realm work there will be an opportunity for businesses to apply for a grant to improve the frontage of their property and add to the overall ambience of the town centre.

"The new business environment created by the upgrading should attract new investment into the area and reinvigorate the commercial heart of Lurgan.”
