He added that bus fares would remain the same despite a forecast 3% hike during 2014, and he said rail fares will also be held at current levels.

“This announcement will have a positive impact on economic recovery,” said Mr Kennedy.

“Bus and train users are being rightly rewarded for supporting Translink during 2013 and increasing passenger journeys to record levels.

Ulster Unionist Council Candidate Alexander Redpath has welcomed the announement by UUP Transport Minister Danny Kennedy that an absolute price freeze on all public transport fares will apply during 2014.

Speaking on the announcement Alexander Redpath said: “I am delighted that the Ulster Unionist Party has delivered a freeze on public transport fares. “As a busy commuter City Lisburn relies on its excellent public transport links. This announcment will be a welcome relief for working families who have seen their incomes fall behind inflation. This price freeze has been possible because of record passenger numbers across Metro, Ulsterbus and NI Railways over the past year.

“This announcement isn’t just good news for hard pressed commuters but also for the environment.

“Increased use of public transport and reduced reliance on cars is good for traffic, good for commuters and good for the world we live in,” he concluded.
