Public urged to be 'safe'

NORMAN Surplus has appealed for spectators at Monday's take-off event in Sandy Bay to "stay safe".

Larne’s very own adventure-seeker will be flying in to Sandy Bay at about 1.00am as he prepares to embark on his 115-day round the world trip.

And he has urged anyone who is planning to come along and watch the start of his journey to keep a safe distance away from the gyrocopter.

He said: “The autogyro can be extremely dangerous to be around. People may think that once the big rotor on the top has stopped spinning, it is safe to approach.

“However, the rear rotor spins extremely fast and is very difficult to see, so I would ask everyone to clear a space for me to land and stay well back until the noise has stopped completely.”

Once Norman has arrived at Sandy Bay, he plans to say goodbye to his family and set off on the first leg of his amazing journey, which will involve a short trip to England.
