Public’s role in fighting crime ‘vital’

THE public have a vital role in the prevention and detection of crime in north Antrim, police have said.

At a meeting of Moyle District Policing Partnership in Ballycastle last Thursday, police paid tribute to those members of the public who have helped bring about a reduction in recorded crime in the area - but said more can be done to lower crime rates further.

Asked what specific aspects of local policing the PSNI Area Commander John Magill would attribute the reduction in crime to, he replied:

“The public reporting crime firstly,” he said.

“If we get information we will act on it.

“Another important thing is pro-activity on the part of the police.

“Going out there, being on the streets and targeting crime.”

AC Magill said he believed there had been a strengthening in relations between the public and police in Moyle.

PSNI Inspector Bryan Hume echoed calls for the community to engage with police in the fight against crime.

“Prevention is better than cure,” said the Inspector.

He said he had been approached regarding the setting up of two new Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in Moyle, adding that police were always more than willing to support such ventures and offer guidance to those involved.
