Pupils show energy for classical music

PUPILS at Monkstown Community School recently welcomed some surprise guests from Camerata Ireland, an orchestra of high calibre musicians whose renowned global tours have gained them a reputation for excellence across the world.

The orchestra, whose joint patrons are Queen Elizabeth II and Irish President Mary McAleese, also work hard to create opportunities for young budding musicians.

The visit to the school was facilitated by Phoenix Natural Gas, who are working in partnership with Camerata Ireland this year to bring musical inspiration to schoolchildren in towns and cities throughout Northern Ireland.

Adie Moffett, music teacher at Monkstown Community School, commented on the visit, saying: “We would like to thank Phoenix and Camerata Ireland for coming along to our school.

“The pupils were treated to a true masterclass in how to play instruments like the piano, the trumpet and the clarinet.”

Maria Campkin of Phoenix Natural Gas added: “It was great to see the pupils so enthused by the musicians on show and our hope is that at least some of them will now be inspired to go on to pick up and learn an instrument themselves.”

As a parting gift the school was given free tickets for this summer’s eagerly anticipated Camerata Ireland Clandeboye Festival, to be held in Bangor from August 16 - 21.
