Pupils take lesson in the sky

STUDENTS from St. Cecilia's College were treated to an educational flight on board a Bombardier Q400 aircraft, operated by Flybe, which left the George Best Belfast City Airport runway for a classroom in the sky to learn about the science of aeronautics.

The students won the special flight when taking part in a science initiative for pupils from local secondary schools.

The Millennium Forum, in conjunction with Bombardier, provided hundreds of pupils with the opportunity to further explore and learn the science and wonder of "flight" via an interactive presentation by Bombardier at the Millennium Forum.

The experience brought education and arts together in a fun creative space.

Tony Monaghan, Education Liaison Officer at Bombardier, said: "The Bombardier Aerospace (NI) Foundation is delighted to have been able to support the Millennium Forum by offering a grant for the presentation on the science of aeronautics and an actual flight in a Bombardier Q400 for 30 lucky pupils.

"This flight gave the 1st year pupils from St Cecilia's an insight into aircraft demonstration and manufacture, as well as promoting the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects."

Cara Mc Cartney, Sponsorship and Development Officer, said: "The Millennium Forum is grateful to the Bombardier Foundation for its support on this project.

"The synergy created by the Millennium Forum and Bombardier provided additional access to the arts for local youth and the opportunity for them to be educated on the science of aeronautics.

"The project was fun for everyone involved and at the same time promoted cross-community discussion and exchange."

The students of St. Cecilia's were overjoyed at their unique flight experience with one of the largest civil aircraft manufacturers in the world.

Their one-hour flight took them on a journey of discovery to help them understand how a plane flies and what being an airline pilot involves.

The Forum, in association with Bombardier, was delighted to deliver this exciting alternative to the classroom for this high-flying group of students
