Pupil’s War on Want earns £100 in hours

DURING their first morning of “bargaining” in 1971 twenty young pupils from Friends’ school made a grant total of £100 at their War on Want shop in Jordan’s Bow Street premises.

The shop, which is still open today, operated from Thursday to Saturday, 9.30am-5.30pm.

Appeals, which would seem unnecessary to the modern War on Want, were made by then Friend’s teachers and students for items of clothing, household goods, kitchen utensils and toys.

Arrangements could even be made for the items to be picked up, whereas today these items are dropped off by members of the public looking to aid the shop’s charitable efforts.
