Pupils write up with winners

TWO pupils of Corran Integrated Primary School have been short-listed for a prize in a letter writing competition run by Royal Mail.

When asked to write to their 1st class hero, Cai McKeever and Callum Wharry had very different ideas as to who to write to.

Cai, aged 10, wrote to Marconi and Callum, also aged 10, wrote to Sir Nicholas Winton. Their letters impressed judges with their sincerity and imagination using creative skills to tell the reader why their chosen subjects were their heroes.

Cai asks of Marconi: “If I was able to meet you I would ask how the idea for the wireless came to you. It would be fantastic and very interesting to talk to the person who actually invented the wireless.”

Callum in his letter says: “I was watching the News last night and decided I had to write to you. Your heroic actions went unnoticed for generations. My parents and I had never heard of you. Saving the lives of 669 children is no small feat, especially as you had to raise a lot of the money and support to rescue the children. You are a true hero to me as you are to all the families you saved.”

Both Cai and Callum are two of 10 children short-listed in their respective age category and will receive a First Day Cover of the Royal Society stamps issued today together with a presentation pack of 1st Class stamps.

Winners in each category will be announced on March 11.
