Push for promotion of organ donation

Jo-Anne Dobson MLA has welcomed changes taken directly from her own Private Members Bill, which place a duty on the Department of Health to promote organ donation and transplantation.

Last week Health Minister Simon Hamilton said: “This new clause presents us with an opportunity to further increase the number of people on the Organ Donor Register.

Mrs Dobson said: “The brutal reality which we must never ever forget is that, despite many years of trying and public support for organ donation standing consistently at around 90%, the number of local people signing up to the organ donor register has not risen beyond around 35%.

“I am hopeful that these changes, which have been taken directly from my own Private Members Bill on Organ Donation, will ensure that the passionate volunteers and charities who have promoted organ donation across Northern Ireland for many decades will no longer be left to do so alone.

“I hope that the future Health Minister will ensure a consistent focus on increasing life-saving transplants and, indeed, will listen to the organ donation family, those who are closest to this issue.”
